Cambridge have lost their 100% winning record on the road in Northern League games this season, having lost their Anzac Day match 3-2 to Albany United.
Playing at Rosedale Park on Auckland’s North Shore, the game changed when Albany scored twice in a three-minute spell at the start of the second half.
Either side of that, honours were even in this Lotto NRFL second division encounter and a late Cambridge fightback almost earned a draw for the reds.
Cambridge took an early lead through Josh Clarkin when he netted for the seventh time this season.
But midway through the first half, Cambridge failed to clear and Albany levelled through Keagan Brophy in a goalmouth scramble.
The teams went into half-time tied at 1-1 but it was the home side that came out firing.
Within three minutes of the restart, Brophy found his second goal, heading home from a free kick.
Then, a couple of minutes later, Dev Pokhrel extended Albany’s lead to 3-1.
The sides cancelled each other out for half an hour but Cambridge gave themselves hope when vice captain Nathan Claridge was fouled by goalkeeper Ty Stretton and the Reds were awarded a penalty.
Marcelo Sosa put the spot-kick away with five minutes remaining.
Josh Clarkin appeared to be brought down in the penalty area in the dying seconds of the game but the referee denied the Reds their claims of a second penalty.
Cambridge get the chance to quickly recover from their loss as they face Bucklands Beach at John Kerkhof Park this Saturday (3pm kick off).
