Cambridge hosts the biggest game of the season (so far!) when Waiheke United comes to John Kerkhof Park for a first-round tie in the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup.
Both clubs received byes in the preliminary round of New Zealand football’s oldest national competition but only one will go forward from this sudden-death clash on Saturday.
The game starts at the earlier-than-usual 2.30pm in case it needs extra time to decide the winners.
For Cambridge, it’s the dream draw – a home tie against a Northern League first division side noted for the passion and level of support from its fans.
The Waiheke Islanders have been known to turn up in large numbers, with flags, banners and smoke flares, while chanting and singing in support of their team.
For the Reds, it’s a chance to turn around their league form after a run of losses, plus it’s head coach Mike Woodlock’s last game in the dugout so the team will be hoping to farewell him in style.
Saturday’s ISPS Handa Chatham Cup match is sponsored by Vigour Physiotherapy.
With the first team tied up in the Chatham Cup, there are no Northern League fixtures this weekend, meaning our reserves team (who lead their competition) get a weekend off.
