Cambridge FC’s women’s team will play the rest of the season a grade higher after sealing promotion from the Waikato Women’s B division.

The side beat Waikato Unicol 2-1 in a match that decided which of the two teams would jump a division.

Tied on league points but ahead on goal difference, Cambridge needed a win or a draw to go up and they sealed the win with a strong first half display.

Caitlyn Vercoe and Astrid Howarth scored for Cambridge, the latter hitting a marvellous strike from 30 metres.

The teams went into the break with Cambridge 2-1 ahead and then they remained deadlocked for the rest of the match.

Coach Andrew Taylor praised a number of individual performances, including goalkeeper and captain Jen Hull who made some excellent saves and distributed well from the back.

Courtney Harvey and Gemma Martin had top games and the Hill Homes Player of the Day was Chloe Zuppicich for her stand out performance.

“I rested five usual starters and the win shows how much depth we have,” Taylor said after the win.
