Cambridge’s Northern League teams make their longest away trip of the year this weekend while our women get the chance to reach their fourth knockout final in six seasons.
Here’s the weekend line-up:
Lotto NRFL second division
Cambridge’s first and reserve teams play Northland FC in a Northern League double header in Whangarei.
The match requires an overnight stay at a local backpacker’s hostel and a 600km round trip for the teams.
The Reds need a first team win to kick clear of a crowded bunch of teams all lingering too close to the second division relegation zone, while the reserves can maintain their lead of the second-string competition with another win.
The reserves kick off at 12.30pm while the main game starts at 3pm.
Loaded WaiBOP Championship
The championship squad have the weekend off and will play their final fixture of the season, at home to Ngaruawahia United, on August 18.
Te Awamutu have defaulted their local derby against Cambridge which was to have been played at John Kerkhof Park.
Fourth-placed Cambridge have been awarded a 3-0 win against second-bottom Te Awamutu.
The D1 side lead their division and can maintain the pressure on nearest rivals Te Aroha Cobras by recording an emphatic win this Saturday against mid-table Waikato Unicol.
The match has been transferred to Jansen Park and starts at 2.45pm.
The D2s host bottom-placed Melville United, starting at 12.30pm.
Sunday: Waikato Women’s Cup
Cambridge’s women travel to Claudelands Rovers’ Galloway Park on Sunday for their semi-final of the Waikato Women’s Cup, kicking off at 11am.
Cambridge are chasing their fourth knockout final in six seasons.
In 2013, Claudelands Rovers beat Cambridge in the final but a year later, Cambridge turned the tables, bringing the 2014 trophy back to John Kerkhof Park.
Cambridge were also beaten finalists in 2015 and reached the final of the Waikato Plate in 2016.
The winners of the Claudelands Rovers-Cambridge tie will play the winners of West Hamilton United and Melville United’s Development team.
Sunday: Youth football
Our U-12 boys’ team have a break while the U-13 boys play Hamilton Wanderers in the WaiBOP Federation Youth League. The game starts at 11am at John Kerkhof Park.
