Coach Richardson targets NRFL promotion in 2019

Cambridge FC head coach Paul Richardson says his staff and players will target promotion as their main goal for 2019.

Having consolidated a mid-table position in the club’s return to Northern League competition last year, Richardson (pictured) says the experience gained and a strong squad will provide the platform for improvement this year.

“We have to be ambitious,” Richardson said. “We showed last year we were capable of matching the best and if we can find consistency in our form, we’ll be in the running for the (second division) title.”

Cambridge’s 2018 season started with a string of wins and the Reds finished strongly but a mid-season dip in form, and six draws, proved costly.

“If we can turn draws into wins this year, we can give the title a decent shot,” he said.

The Lotto NRFL competition structure will be reviewed this year with a possibility that the second division may be scrapped in its current form.

If that’s the case, the safest route for Cambridge to ensure Northern League football in 2020 and beyond is to win promotion to the first division.

The title winners and runners-up will earn promotion.
