Cambridge stay in third place on the Lotto NRFL second division table after a hard-fought 1-0 win against Albany United.
Playing on a small pitch at Rosedale Park, the Reds took the three points with a goal from Josh Clarkin in the 35th minute.
The goal, Clarkin’s third of the season, and a well-earned clean sheet ensured the victory.
The Reds were encouraged with the return from injury of goalkeeper Patrick Steele and the experienced duo of Patrick Woodlock and Kieran Hill, who was named among the subs.
For Cambridge, it was yet another match decided by a one-goal margin – a feature of the Reds’ seven games so far in the Northern League. The side has the best defensive record in the competition, conceding only seven goals.
The top three clubs have pulled away from the pack after the round.
Leaders Manurewa and second-placed Claudelands Rovers also won away from home and with almost a third of the competition completed, the young Cambridge side is showing it has made significant progress from last season when it finished seventh.
Next weekend, Cambridge take a break from Northern League to travel to Papakura City for a first round tie in the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup.
