Cambridge’s young women’s team have lost to an experienced West Hamilton United side in a re-run of last year’s Waikato Cup Final.
Playing at Hamilton’s Weka Street, West Ham finished with a strong second half performance to overrun Cambridge by 10-2 in this Waikato Division 1 match.
West Ham took the lead in the second minute before Cambridge’s Olivia Sutherland found an equaliser after 20 minutes.
Cambridge then went 2-1 up, thanks to a goal from Caitlin Varcoe.
However, three goals before the interval gave the home side a 4-2 lead at the break.
In the second spell, West Ham’s experience gave them the advantage and they added six more goals.
The Hill Homes Player of the Day for Cambridge was Abbey Kanter while Kym Thomasen, Gemma Martin, goalkeeper Annie Martin and Caitlin Varcoe all made strong contributions.
Next week, the women’s team take a break from league competition and head to Waihi FC for a first round game in this year’s Waikato Women’s Cup.
Cambridge were runners-up in the cup last year, losing to West Ham in the final.
