Reds leave it late (again) to snare three points at Northland FC

Cambridge stay in contention for the Lotto NRFL second division title after another last gasp victory, this time against Northland FC at Tikipunga.

The win pushes the Reds into second place on the table, a point behind Hamilton club Claudelands Rovers, while Manurewa slipped up, losing their lead of the table with a shock loss at home to Metro FC.

Cambridge have made a habit of giving their opponents a lead, only to finish strongly and take the win with late goals.

This match – which required a 620km round-trip for the squad – was no different.

Northland went 1-0 ahead through Jeremy Rintoul in the 7th minute, and that is how the teams turned around at the break.

Cambridge poured on the pressure in the second spell and midfielder Harry Wick volleyed home a cracking equaliser in the 79th minute to stun the home supporters. It was his first goal for the club since joining in pre-season from Central United.

The Reds kept throwing everything forward and with a minute of normal time to go, winger Callum MacLeod scored the winning goal.

Next weekend, Cambridge are at home to title contenders Manurewa AFC.
