Reds regain winning form with 5-0 romp at Bill McKinlay Park

Cambridge have rediscovered winning form with an impressive 5-0 win against Unimount Bohemian Celtic on the artificial turf of Auckland’s Bill McKinlay Park.

The win was vital to keep alive the Reds hopes of catching the Lotto NRFL second division leaders in the race for promotion.

The Reds were helped by other results as the competition’s top two sides, Metro and Manurewa, both lost this weekend.

Cambridge welcomed back three players who formed the spine of the side – central defender Jack Portegys (from injury), midfielder Harry Wick (recalled to the starting line-up) and leading goalscorer Josh Clarkin (recovered from glandular fever).

Josh Clarkin celebrated his return after five weeks off with the game’s first goal when he scored after 12 minutes.

That goal separated the teams in the first half and Clarkin doubled the Reds’ lead with another goal eight minutes after the break.

Captain of the day Kieran Hill scored his first goal of the season in the 69th minute, providing enough buffer for coach Paul Richardson to substitute Josh Clarkin.

English winger Luke Stephenson added Cambridge’s fourth goal on 75′, his fourth goal in his last three appearances in a first team shirt.

Cambridge’s fifth goal was claimed by busy midfielder Levi Clark, scoring his first goal since re-joining the club in mid-season.

The win sees the Reds fifth on the table but within reach of the leading bunch if they can maintain winning form, as all the top sides need to play each other during the competition’s last six rounds.

The Reds’ next game is on Saturday July 27 at John Kerkhof Park when the visitors are third-placed Albany United.
