Clean sheet and strike by leading goalscorer get the Reds home

posted in: Men, News, Northern League

A tight defence played a key part in Cambridge grinding out a 1-0 win against lowly Onehunga Mangere in the Lotto NRFL second division.

The Reds returned to Cambridge with their fourth clean sheet of the season, firmly shutting the gate on any hopes the Aucklanders had of causing an upset at Mangere Mountain.

Cambridge’s winner came from leading goalscorer Josh Clarkin whose 4th-minute effort took him to 11 league and cup goals in a season interrupted by glandular fever.

Since returning from illness, Clarkin has regained his scoring form and today’s win keeps Cambridge in fifth place on a crowded league table.

The loss puts Onehunga Mangere firmly at risk of relegation, especially after struggling Northland FC found a point in their 1-1 draw with title contenders Metro FC.

The Reds’ next game is on Saturday August 10 (3pm) when Northland FC visit John Kerkhof Park.
