Cambridge FC’s new-look women’s team won their opening game of the 2020 Waikato Division 2 season with a second-half fightback to overcome Coromandel side Thames.
Many of the home side were making their Cambridge debuts and coach Jamie McKean was delighted with the way they gelled after falling behind.
The teams had almost played half an hour of even and entertaining football when the visitors took the lead.
However it did not last long as Cambridge captain Steph Upton levelled in the 34th minute.
The teams turned around 1-1 at John Kerkhof Park in ideal conditions.
The winner came in the 78th minute when Olivia Sutherland – the team’s second top scorer last year – found the net.
From there, the home side defended their lead well to take three points in a satisfying start to the season.
After the game, coach McKean named Upton as the Hill Homes Player of the Day, citing her leadership in her first game as team captain and contribution with the first goal of the team’s season.
