Women lose 2-1 to Te Awamutu in close encounter

Cambridge FC’s women’s team lost their Waikato Women’s Division Two fixture 2-1 to Te Awamutu Pink Ladies in a close match at John Kerkhof Park.

The result was decided in the first half when all three goals were scored.

Cambridge found the net first through Maria Cameron but Te Awamutu equalised a minute later.

The rest of the first half was evenly balanced until Cambridge’s Georgia Methven put through her own goal on the stroke of half-time.

The second half saw both teams goalless and the result leaves both teams with a win from their two opening games.

Indications are that Division Two will be a close competition this season and coach Jamie McKean has drawn together a promising squad of young players who were helped today by the return of Emma Barrott and Sophee Rapson-Jones who were first team regulars last year.

Sophie Young was named as the Hill Homes Player of the Day after filling several positions during a hard-working game.
