Women work hard for 1-1 draw at Ngaruawahia United

Cambridge’s women’s team continued to show they’ll be competitive this season with a well-earned 1-1 draw at Ngaruawahia United.

Coach Jamie McKean is rebuilding this year with a mostly-new squad of players, some making their first appearances in the senior ranks.

Cambridge started the better and took the lead in the 13th minute when Olivia Sutherland battled hard for posession, enabling Kymberly Thomasen to cross into the penalty box.

Sophie Young turned the ball into the net to give Cambridge a lead they took into half-time.

In the second half, Cambridge squandered a few chances and against the run of play, Ngaruawahia United found an equaliser.

The draw follows a win and a narrow loss for the Cambridge women which is encouraging for the remainder of the competition.

Next Sunday (July 5), they host Unicol Rovers at John Kerkhof Park (11am).
