How our senior teams fared at the weekend

Cambridge’s senior teams had a lean Saturday with only the club’s Waikato Division Two team collecting all three points with a win.

Here’s how our senior and youth teams fared at the weekend (July 4-5):

Lotto NRFL

Hibiscus Coast 1, Cambridge 0

The Reds travelled to Hibiscus Coast, north of Auckland, to lose 1-0 in a tight Northern League match at Stanmore Bay.

Hibiscus Coast Reserves 3, Cambridge 2

Earlier, in the curtain-raiser, the Reserves lost 3-2 despite leading 2-0 at the break.

WaiBOP Championship

Cambridge 1, Tokoroa 1

A late penalty from 10-man Tokoroa prevented Cambridge taking all the points in a hard-fought 1-1 draw at John Kerkhof Park.

Waikato Senior Men’s

Waikato Division 2: Cambridge 2, Melville United 0

In Waikato Division 2, a double from wily forward Jason Szabo earned the win for Cambridge against Melville United in what coach Chris Petropoulos called the side’s best performance of the year.

Szabo earned the Player of the Day for an outstanding performance, capped by a screamer of a goal for his second.

Waikato Division 5: Northern United 6, Cambridge 1

In Waikato Division 5, Cambridge’s D1 lost 6-1 at Northern United Numpties.

Scorer was Nick Sickelmore from the penalty spot.

Waikato Division 5: Cambridge 1, West Hamilton United 1

The D2s drew 1-1 at home to West Hamilton United’s Floppy Noodles in a game ruled by penalties.

Cambridge took the lead from the penalty spot when Daniel Cattley drilled the ball up the middle.

West Ham levelled when they were awarded a penalty. The spot kick was parried by the Cambridge ‘keeper but West Hamilton put away the rebound.

Cambridge had chances to win the game but missed two penalties.

Both Cambridge division 5 teams are looking for their first wins of the season.

Women’s Waikato Division 2

Cambridge 6, Unicol Rovers 0

Cambridge beat Unicol Rovers 6-0 at John Kerkhof Park to register their best win of the season so far.

Youth teams

Y-League: Cambridge 0, Rotorua 2

Cambridge lost 2-0 to competition leaders Rotorua United in the WaiBOP Federation Y-League.

Player of the Day was Theo Susilla.

J-League: Western United 1, Cambridge 13

The U-12 team beat Western United 13-1 at Ngaruawahia’s Centennial Park to go top of the WaiBOP Federation J-League.

A first-half hat trick from Oscar Gifford and goals from Luke Brooke-Smith and Jesse Macdonald (2) saw the teams turn around with Cambridge 6-0 up.

Western United started the second half well and took advantage to score.

Cambridge reasserted themselves with Brooke-Smith completing the team’s second hat-trick and Gethyn Foster (2), Jaxson Makgill (2) and Oliver Rickit all getting on the scoresheet.
