Champs stay in touch with leaders despite stalemate at Te Puke

Cambridge remain in touch with the leading teams in this year’s WaiBOP Championship despite a disappointing goalless draw at Te Puke United.

Cambridge coach Steve Thomas said he felt his side had the better of the play on a bobbly pitch but paid the price for not putting away goalscoring chances.

The 0-0 draw keeps Cambridge within striking distance of competition leaders Taupo – the only unbeaten side – and challengers Claudelands Rovers and Whakatane Town.

Cambridge has one of the tightest defences in the Championship, having conceded only three goals in five outings.

Coach Thomas said goalkeeper Shaun Bax was showing top form, anchoring a firm defence.

Player of the Day at Te Puke was defender Luke Ashby who provided another solid performance.
