Women finish strongly to beat Melville United 5-0

Cambridge have kept up their challenge for the Waikato Women’s Division Two title, beating Melville United 5-0 at John Kerkhof Park.

Cambridge have moved into third place on the league table and their performance against Melville extends their run of winning form.

They went ahead after 15 minutes when a corner was scrambled home by Emma Barrott on the far post.

That’s how the scored till half time.

In the second spell, leading goalscorer Astrid Howarth found space aplenty and she struck a hat-trick, twice beating the Melville ‘keeper when through one-on-one, and another struck from the edge of the penalty area.

Cambridge’s final goal was scored by Sophie Young.

Maria Cameron was the Hill Homes Player of the Day.

Next Sunday (August 9), Cambridge are away to Huntly Thistle (kick off 11am).
