Golden Oldies take 2017 Cambridge Sevens

A reunion of former team mates has led to the latest winners of Cambridge’s annual football sevens tournament for women.

Calling themselves Golden Oldies (pictured), the group of players used to play together for Hamilton’s Claudelands Rovers in football’s northern league.

But the chance to re-unite for a day with former coach Alan Witt also gave them the chance to show they’ve lost none of their ability, and they became the seventh winners of the Cambridge Sevens title.

They won their qualifying group with three successive wins, beat title holders Unbroken in a semi-final and then beat Melville United 5-0 in the tournament final at John Kerkhof Park.

Fourteen teams from the Waikato/Bay of Plenty contested the day-long tournament, dodging the odd shower and entertaining spectators with free-flowing sevens football.

A week before, the Cambridge Sevens men’s tournament was won by Hamilton’s Young Gunners.

Our men’s tournament is sponsored by Calnar Point of Sale and our women’s tournament is sponsored by The Soccer Shop.
