Cambridge’s Northern League reserves squad secured a comfortable 3-0 win against local rivals Te Awamutu in the team’s second fixture of their pre-season campaign.
Playing in hot and sunny conditions, Cambridge’s ability to keep the ball paid off as both teams wilted towards the end of the game.
Striker Dylan Blair, who last season played for Melville United, opened the scoring when he reacted first to a loose ball after a corner (see video).
Blair added a second goal halfway through the match when he cleverly turned his defender, and then turned him again, to smash the ball home from 12 metres.
Forward Adam Brady then extended Cambridge’s lead to three goals when a chipped ball landed behind the Te Awamutu defence, allowing him to volley it cleanly into the net.
As the heat intensified, the overall play deteriorated but Cambridge created a succession of chances, none of which were converted. But that’s not unusual in pre-season and the Reds reserves can be satisfied with their progress, and especially the performance of a defence that looked solid throughout.
- Next Saturday, the Reserves play Papatoetoe Reserves in the first game of a double-header at John Kerkhof Park, kicking off at 12.30pm.
