Reds hand over WaiBOP Shield

Cambridge has already lost one trophy this season but for all the right reasons.

The club were the holders of the WaiBOP Federation Challenge Shield, having won it from West Hamilton United last season and then successfully defending it.

By holding it at season’s end, Cambridge’s name joins those engraved on the shield as previous holders.

Played under a format similar to rugby’s Ranfurly Shield, the holder is obliged to defend it when playing home games in the top level of WaiBOP competition.

However, Cambridge’s promotion to the Lotto NRFL second division means we won’t have a team competing in this year’s Loaded WaiBOP Premiership.

As a result, the shield reverts to its previous holder, West Hamilton United.

But it could be on the move again as Matamata Swifts travel to Weka St for this weekend’s season opener in the Premiership, and the match will double as a challenge for the shield.
