Cambridge’s women’s first team got their season off to a flying start with an impressive 5-2 win in a local derby at Te Awamutu.
The performance was highlighted by a hat-trick by striker Rachel Hill, named the Hill Homes Player of the Day, and impressive senior debuts from young players Paris Le Gros and Libby Griffin.
The Andrew Taylor-coached side took a first half lead through Hill at a sunny Te Awamutu Stadium.
The goals opened up in the second spell and Cambridge extended their lead to 3-1 thanks to a goal from Astrid Howarth, now playing in midfield for the team, and a second from Hill.
Howarth scored her second of the day with a long range effort to make it 4-1 before Hill completed her hat-trick.
The home side scored a consolation goal late in the match.
Coach Taylor was pleased with his side’s opening game, and acknowledged the contributions of the team’s new members and Maria Cameron who held the defence together well at centre back.
