Championship team notch first win

Striker Tom Woutersen made a stunning start to the season, scoring a match-winning hat-trick in Cambridge’s 3-2 win over Te Puke United in the Loaded WaiBOP Championship.

The forward, who scored 12 times for last year’s Premiership-winning first team, took the pitch for the first time in 2018 and had an immediate impact.

His goals in the 25th and 29th minutes gave Cambridge a 2-0 half-time lead against the Bay of Plenty side.

The home side fought back in the second spell but a third Woutersen goal, with 10 minutes to go, sealed the win, giving Cambridge their first points in this campaign.

Meanwhile, the Cambridge A team lost their Waikato A Division match against Ngaruawahia United 2-0 at John Kerkhof Park, the only hiccup in a good day for the club’s senior men’s teams.

In Auckland, Cambridge beat Onehunga Mangere United 4-2 in the Lotto NRFL second division, while the reserves beat Onehunga Mangere 5-0 in the early game.

Playing at home, the D1s beat Northern United D1 4-2 and the D2s also beat Northern United’s D2 side by the same score. Scorers for the D2s were Sunny Prashu (2), Rob Dickson and Andy Myers.

On Sunday, Cambridge women beat Te Aroha Cobras 6-1 with goals from Gemma Martin, Rachel Hill (2), Astrid Howarth (2) and Abby Cook.

Both of youth teams lost their games at Northern United in their WaiBOP Federation Leagues. The U-12s lost 3-1 while the U-13s lost 1-0.
