When 450 kids get their season underway …

More than 450 boys and girls – and an army of family supporters – helped get Cambridge’s junior season underway at the club’s grounds.

Car parking was at a premium from 9am on as excited children lined up for their first Saturday morning football of 2018.

In the north-west corner of the fields were a large group of four-year-olds, about to start their first fun session of football as part of our First Kicks programme. Maybe there was a future Red, a future All White and a future Football Fern among them …

Many of the five-year-old First Kicks players were quickly into it – they remembered what they learned last year.

Across the Vogel St paddocks were boys, girls, coaches urging players on, parents encouraging their children and, of course, an orderly queue for coffee at the cafe van and the morish aroma of hot chips wafting from the club shop …

Yes, winter had arrived.

By lunchtime, goals had been re-lived; grazes treated; Players of the Day decided … and the first lost property of the season was on display.

That was May 5. Opening day. And we get to do it all again every Saturday through winter …

Above: Feedback from parents about our opening day was positive. Thanks!
