Cambridge FC’s U-13 boys’ youth team entertained a strongly supportive crowd at John Kerkhof Park on Thursday evening, losing 5-7 to Melville United under floodlights.
The evenly contested game was the first competitive Federation Boy’s Youth League match played under lights by the Cambridge team and was a successful outing as the squad showed what it could do against a decent Melville side.
The teams were locked 4-4 at half-time but Melville got the upper hand in the second spell, finishing the game with a two-goal margin.
Cambridge’s goalscorers were Blake Allison (3), Tanner Dean and Reilly Benefield.
Allison was named Player of the Match for his efforts to consistently go forward, track back when necessary and take his chances in front of goal.
Cambridge coach Shaun O’Brien thanked the team’s families and supporters got getting behind the team, including Jacob’s father who ran the line and Carole who put up the nets.
This Sunday, the U-13s back up for their second game in three days, playing Papamoa at John Kerkhof Park (11.20am kick off).
