Cambridge FC’s reserves remain top of the Lotto NRFL second division reserves league after a ruthless 4-0 win at home against Northland FC.
The Reds kept most of the game’s possession and patiently broke down their opponents’ defence, and took the chances they created.
Leading goalscorer Andrew Taylor took his season tally to double figures when he opened the scoring at John Kerkhof Park after half an hour.
Five minutes later, he doubled the Reds’ lead with a well-taken goal from the right side of the penalty area.
That’s how the teams went into the interval as light rain kept the pitch greasy and put a premium on keeping control of the ball.
In the 55th minute, midfielder Shaun Richardson scored the goal of the game, rifling home a piledriver from the edge of the area.
After 77 minutes, Cambridge put the result beyond doubt when Taylor neatly set up striker Adam Brady to sweep the ball home from close.
The Reds went into the game with a two-point buffer at the top of the table but thanks to other results going in their favour, they now lead the table by four points.
