Weekend round-up: how our senior and youth teams fared

Cambridge’s hopes of reaching another Waikato Cup final are over after the club’s Waikato A team lost their second-round tie 3-2 against Claudelands Rovers B.

The A team was hoping to emulate last year’s B team who were beaten finalists for the Ron White Trophy but a poor start to the game ended Cambridge’s cup hopes.

Cambridge trailed 1-0 at the break and then allowed Rovers to double their lead.

That prompted a spirited fightback from Cambridge with goals from Peter Buesnel – trying to reach his third consecutive cup final – and Mitchell Claridge.

No sooner had Cambridge drawn level at 2-2, the visitors found a third goal and they were able to hold onto their lead to progress to the next round of the cup.

Waikato Plate

Cambridge D2s lost their first round Waikato Plate tie in an exciting match at John Kerkhof Park that left them on the wrong end of a 5-4 scoreline against Putaruru Rangers B.

The teams traded first half goals to go into the break at 2-2, with one of Cambridge’s goals coming from a bizarre own goal struck by a Rangers player some 30 metres out from his own line.

Andrew Myers scored for the D2s and added another in the second half, while Cambridge’s other goals were credited to Rob Dickson and Luke Macris.
