Veteran Dave O’Donnell took the club’s goalscoring honours this weekend with a hat-trick all scored from headers in Cambridge D1’s 5-1 win against Waikato Unicol.
O’Donnell, who was the team’s top goalscorer last season, spearheaded a fine performance from the D1s.
The home side went 2-0 by half-time and then pressed home their superiority in the second half to end the match 5-1.
Other goals were scored by Scott Jenkins (penalty) and Tony Dikmans.
Loaded WaiBOP Championship
Cambridge lost 5-1 at home to Waikato Unicol.
The Reds took an early lead through Edinson Arroyo but Unicol came back strongly to take a 4-1 lead at the interval.
Cambridge put up a strong effort in the second half but could not make headway.
Unicol scorers were Kirk Newman, Aiden Smith, Gus Murray (2) and Micah Barr.
Waikato A division
Cambridge’s home fixture against Te Aroha Cobras was postponed due to ground conditions which limited the number of pitches and games that the club could stage.

Cambridge’s women’s team will play the rest of their season a grade higher after winning promotion to Waikato A with a 2-1 win at Waikato Unicol on Sunday. Click here for details.
