Women perform well but lose 4-2 to Swifts in season opener

Cambridge women have lost their opening game of the Waikato Women’s first division season in an end to end game against Matamata Swifts.

Coach Andrew Taylor said the 4-2 scoreline did not reflect how close the game was with shots hitting the woodwork and both goalkeepers seeing plenty of action.

“Matamata took their chances and that was the difference,” Taylor said.

Striker Astrid Howarth scored both Cambridge goals, including a volley from outside the penalty area.

Taylor said a number of players had outstanding games including Caitlyn Vercoe, Gemma Martin, Maria Cameron and goalkeeper Annie Martin.

The Hill Homes Player of the Day was Sophee Rapson-Jones.

Next Sunday, the women are at home to Claudelands Rovers (11am start).
