Start dates emerge as football prepares for winter season

Cambridge footballers will start their disrupted seasons in June.

WaiBOP Football has confirmed start dates for the season after New Zealand Football detailed how the game would resume under Alert Level 2 during the coronavirus pandemic.

Key dates

Sunday June 7 – Youth federation leagues get underway, with our Federation Y-League U-14 team travelling to Bay of Plenty.

(This start date was changed on May 28 after BoP councils agreed to open their grounds a week before Waikato councils.)

Saturday June 13 – junior football gets underway.

(WaiBOP Football had originally hoped junior football would start on January 6 but opening day was delayed a week after consultation with local councils).

Saturday June 13 – senior Waikato men’s competitions (round one).

Sunday June 14 – senior Waikato women’s competitions (round one).

Sunday June 14 – WaiBOP Federation J-League U-12 league gets underway.

Saturday June 20 – expected start of the Lotto NRFL second division (to be confirmed). The Reds are likely to play away from home on June 20 but play at John Kerkhof Park on June 27.

Our club’s preparation for the season will see training step up as opening games get closer.

Players from the Ricki Herbert Football Academy skill centre train at John Kerkhof Park.
