Late goal secures second win for Cambridge in WaiBOP Championship

Jacob Lind could not have picked a better time to score his first senior goal for Cambridge FC, waiting till four minutes from the final whistle to notch the winner against Whakatane Town in the WaiBOP Championship.

Both teams went into this fixture unbeaten at John Kerkhof Park with Cambridge winning their season opener 4-1 against Claudelands Rovers and Whakatane beating Te Puke United 2-0.

At this stage of a shortened season, whoever won this clash would join the clubs favoured for a tilt at this year’s title.

The first half finished even, and goalless, on a wet surface.

But Cambridge found their edge, and three more points, when Lind scored the matchwinning goal.

Coach Steve Thomas said afterwards he was very pleased with the team’s effort in an evently-contested affair.

He named skipper Adam Brady as the side’s Player of the Day.
