Relief as Reds notch important win to climb off bottom of Lotto NRFL table

Cambridge have moved off the foot of the Northern League second division table with a much-needed win against struggling Greenhithe Catimba.

The Reds won the match 4-1 at John Kerkhof Park with self-discipline playing a major part in the result.

The Catimba players were dogged by ill-discipline which led to three penalties for Cambridge, five yellow cards and Catimba being reduced to 10 men in the second half.

It was an eventful game from the start with tackles flying in and free kicks being awarded in dangerous positions.

Cambridge got the first benefit when they were awarded a penalty in the 17th minute.

Ewan Donald kept his nerve to slot the ball just inside the upright.

The goal gave the home players confidence and they enjoyed a spell of possession mainly in the Catimba half.

The Reds were awarded their second penalty on the half-hour.

Donald repeated his early spot-kick to double Cambridge’s lead, which they took into the break.

In the 66th minute, Cambridge received their third penalty. This time, Mike Cosgrave stepped up an confidently smashed it past the Catimba ‘keeper.

For the last 20 minutes, Cambridge dominated and the result was not in doubt after Benjamin Gutierrez was sent off for a clumsy tackle, reducing the visitors to 10 men.

Josh Clarkin finished the scoring with a calmly-taken goal two minutes from time, when he drew out the ‘keeper and passed the ball into an empty net.

The three points came as a relief to Cambridge who had lost their previous three games by single goal margins. The Reds go on the road for the next two fixtures – Onehunga Mangere next weekend, followed by a trip to Fencibles United.
