Cambridge’s new-look women’s team has taken the lead in the Waikato Women’s Division Two competition after a 5-0 victory at Mangakino United.
It was the team’s second big win in a row, having won 6-0 against Unicol Rovers in the previous round.
The latest win gives Cambridge a one-point lead over four other teams as the competition shapes up to be a closely-fought affair.
Cambridge has played one more game than some of its nearest rivals and will sit out next week’s games, receiving a bye.
At Mangakino, the home side belied their bottom placing in the league for 20 minutes, holding out the free-scoring Cambridge team.
However, on 20 minutes, Astrid Howarth found the net to give Cambridge the lead.
Lorena Herrera doubled Cambridge’s lead on 34 minutes and on the stroke of half-time, Sophie Young set up Mariela Robledo who made the score 3-0 at the break.
Again, Mangakino put up strong resistance early in the second half but Howarth scored her second goal from the penalty spot in the 70th minute.
Eight minutes later, Robledo completed her double in the game. She was the Hill Homes Player of the Day.
