Cambridge have won the inaugural Over-40s end-of-season tournament, beating East Coast Bays in the final.

Fabian Burgos scored the only goal as the home team edged the final 1-0 at John Kerkhof Park.

More than 100 ‘mature’ footballers descended on Cambridge to take part in the tournament.

Six teams gathered for a day of 30-minute games, representing clubs from the upper North Island. Participating teams were:

  • Takapuna AFC (Auckland)
  • East Coast Bays Over 45s (Auckland)
  • East Coast Bays Foreign Legion (Auckland)
  • Bay Olympic (Auckland)
  • Whangarei Mad Hatters (Northland)
  • Cambridge

For the visiting teams, the tournament was a welcome chance to enjoy 11-a-side football after much of the Auckland season was cut short and disrupted by restrictions required to combat COVID-19.

Many of the visiting players took the opportunity to stay overnight in Cambridge to enjoy the town’s hospitality, and the teams were to enjoy a tournament dinner at the clubrooms in the early evening.
