Rain fails to dampen the action as WaiBOP beat the Lights at Cambridge

Supporters and players refused to let a rainy Sunday dampen their day as WaiBOP women pulled off a thrilling 2-1 win against the Northern Lights at Cambridge’s John Kerkhof Park.

Goals from former Lights player Kelli Brown and Emma Cawte gave WaiBOP their deserved win and handed the Lights the first loss of their season.

Morning rain meant the match – the 24th national league game for men, youth or women hosted by Cambridge FC – became the first to be affected by wet weather.

It made no difference for kids who joined the queue for face painting or to win prizes during half-time activities run by NZ Football.

And as the game entered its final stages, with WaiBOP holding onto their lead, the sun came out …

The game began with a minute’s silence for Argentina’s Diego Maradona who died a few days before.
