Six goals sink Otumoetai as Cambridge go to top of WaiBOP Championship

posted in: Men, News

Cambridge romped to a 6-1 victory against Otumoetai in their WaiBOP Championship match on Easter Saturday.

Whereas Cambridge took an hour to get into top gear in their season opener the week before, this time they started at full pace.

Tom Wouterson, who scored twice off the subs’ bench the week before, was in the starting line-up and he opened the scoring after only six minutes.

Otumoetai bounced back almost immediately, with a goal from Liam McDonagh.

Haydn Roil regained Cambridge’s lead after 19′ before Woutersen added his second goal in the 33rd minute with a tap-in after a good move involving three players.

The sucker punch followed almost on half-time when skipper Adam Brady effectively put the result out of reach for the visitors when he made it 4-1.

In the second half, Roil added a fifth for Cambridge, confirming a Player of the Day performance.

Brady extended the lead to 6-1 with his second goal, in the 73rd minute.

It was an excellent display by a Cambridge side that is going into the season with the same core group as for the past two seasons. The level of understanding between players was evident, as the side built patiently from the back and hogged possession throughout.

Defender Ben Winterson made his team debut and slotted in well.

Next Saturday (April 10) Cambridge head to Hamilton Wanderers for a top-of-the-table clash (12.30pm kick-off).
