Cambridge face another trip to Auckland as they begin their 2021 quest for success in New Zealand football’s oldest club competition.
The Reds have been drawn to play Otahuhu United in the first round of the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup on Saturday May 15 (2pm).
The match is expected to be played at the club’s Seaside Park ground, beside the Southern Motorway.
Otahuhu, a club formed 25 years ago when parents of junior players broke away from Northern League club Courier Rangers, play in the Northern Regional Football’s 4th division (south/east) of community football.
That’s six competition layers below the Lotto NRFL second division, in which Cambridge play.
However, anyone tempted to think the cup draw will lead to a mismatch should consider that Otahuhu beat WaiBOP Premiership side Huntly Thistle 1-0 in the Chatham Cup’s preliminary round.
Of the 127 clubs throughout New Zealand to enter this year’s cup, 64 will remain after the first round proper.
