A strong first-half performance gave Cambridge a much-needed 3-0 win in the WaiBOP Championship against Ngaruawahi United.
Cambridge scored all their goals in the first half to take the league points at John Kerkhof Park, enabling them to move to within a point of league leaders Tokoroa.
The Championship table is heavily congested after this weekend’s results in which Cambridge was the only top four team to take maximum points.
The top six clubs are only one point apart in what is turning out to be the most competitive season yet since the Championship was launched.
Early goals – for and against – have been a feature of Cambridge games this year but this time, Cambridge found the net first when Haydn Roil scored after only four minutes.
That set the course for the game and Cambridge dominated the first half, with Roil and Jordy Silvester attacking down both flanks.
Top goalscorer Adam Brady doubled Cambridge’s lead in the 36th minute and then he effectively ended the contest with his second goal on the stroke of half-time.
Ngaruawahia goalkeeper Stefan Heuberger kept the score respectable with a series of excellent saves.
Coach Steve Thomas awarded the side’s Player of the Day to Josh Dagnall.
Cambridge travel to fifth-placed Te Puke United next Saturday (May 8), with a 12.30pm kick-off.
