Cambridge’s Division 4 team put up a spirited effort but have been knocked out of the Waikato Cup in a second round tie at John Kerkhof Park.

Northern United Numpties, who play in the Waikato third division, beat Cambridge 3-1 to earn a place in the cup quarter finals.

About 15 minutes into the game, Cambridge striker Shane Gray was brought down in the box and the home side were awarded a penalty. The spot kick was struck against the bar and the game remained scoreless.

Five minutes later, Northern United took the lead with a scrambled goal.

Soon after half-time, Cambridge levelled when a Rory Forde shot rebounded off the post and the goalkeeper failed to secure the ball. It fell to Andrew Myers who steered it into the empty net.

Soon after, Cambridge had the opportunity to take the lead when Myer was played in on goal but Cambridge hit the crossbar.

With 15 minutes to go, Northen were awarded a penalty that gave them a 2-1 lead.

The visitors made sure of the win when Marcus Bathan – a former Cambridge player – struck from the edge of the box.

Cambridge’s Player of the Day was defender Ben Carter.
