Six-match winning run comes to an end in WaiBOP Championship

posted in: Men, News

Cambridge’s six-match winning streak in the WaiBOP Championship has been ended by Tauranga Old Blues in a top-of-the-table clash at Waipuna Park.

The damage was done by a flying start from Old Blues who scored twice in the opening stage of the match through Federico Artigas (7′) and Jonty Andrew (16′).

The Old Blues ‘keeper helped his team’s cause with a couple of excellent saves.

The teams turned around with Old Blues 2-0 and for the first time this year, Cambridge could not find a goal.

Instead, Old Blues sealed the result with a third goal five minutes from time through Mauro Romero.

The result leaves Cambridge two points behind leaders Old Blues but the title race is turning into a three-way battle, with Otumoetai also having claims.

Cambridge’s Player of the Day was Aaron Jenkins who was tireless in the defence.

Cambridge’s next game is away to Otumoetai next Saturday (June 19), with a 12.30pm kick-off.
