Women hold off fightback to beat Melville United 3-2 at Gower Park

posted in: News, Women

Cambridge’s women’s team withstood a strong fightback from Melville United before winning their Waikato Women’s Division Two fixture by 3-2.

The win at Gower Park keeps Cambridge in the two-club title race with Ngaruawahia United.

Cambridge opened the scoring after 14 minutes when Steph Upton sent a long ball through for forward Rachel Hill to run onto and score.

Five minutes later, Olivia Milne passed across the face of the Melville goal for Hill to score her second goal.

After 26 minutes, Milne provided the assist for Upton to increase the Cambridge lead to 3-0.

The home side then staged a comeback, scoring in the 32nd and through a 40th-minute penalty.

Neither side could improve on the 3-2 half-time score so Cambridge returned home with three league points and the knowledge that their title hopes remain alive.

Player of the Day was Maria Cameron who marshalled the Cambridge defence.

Cambridge host Huntly Thistle at John Kerkhof Park next Sunday August 1 (11am).

League table
