First half goals seal 3-1 championship victory in Waipa derby match

posted in: Men, News

A free-flowing first half helped Cambridge to a 3-1 win against Te Awamutu in the Waipa derby, a victory that keeps alive hopes of winning the WaiBOP Championship.

All four goals were scored before half-time before the local rivals locked each out in an even second half at John Kerkhof Park.

The match pitted players from neighbouring towns against each other – and even brothers, with Cambridge midfielder Haydn Roil facing off his brother Joel, who was between the goalposts for Te Awamutu.

Though Te Awamutu mounted a few early attacks, it was Cambridge who drew first blood with a goal from Tom Woutersen after 16 minutes.

A minute later, Jordan Silvester doubled Cambridge’s lead.

Four minutes before the break, Ewan Scott-Dickins pulled back a goal for the visitors.

But their hopes of a revival were short-lived when Aaron Jenkins scored Cambridge’s third goal on the stroke of half-time.

Cambridge maintained their lead till the final whistle, taking the three points that keeps them at the top of the championship table.

The side now has two games left and a three-point lead over Tauranga Old Blues – but the Bay side has two games in hand.

Cambridge’s title hopes rely on the Blues slipping up in their run-in to the end of their season.
