Promotion hopes dashed as Reds lose to second division leaders

Cambridge hopes of winning promotion from the Lotto NRFL second division have been dashed by a loss to competition leaders Onehunga Mangere United.

The Reds travelled to Auckland needing a win to stay in touch with the cluster of clubs trying to finish at least in second place to earn promotion.

However, a 6-0 loss at Mangere means that while Cambridge still has a mathematical chance, it would require other teams to all end their season with a string of losses.

For 20 minutes, Cambridge held their own against United but once the home side went ahead through Darcy Knight, the odds were against a Reds win.

Gilberto Souza doubled Onehunga’s lead in the 28th minute and Maksim Manko made it 3-0 after 35 minutes.

Souza converted a penalty five minutes later and the teams went into half-time with a four-goal margin.

Onehunga scored their fifth goal on the hour mark, through substitute Jarrod Gordon, and then struck again through Osman Rastagar in the 82nd minute.

The Reds’ next fixture is against UnMount Bohemian at John Kerkhof Park on Saturday August 21 (3pm).
